Get in the swing of things when you start to hula hoop to get fit. As Health.com says: “Burning 250 calories in just 30 minutes never goes out of style.” Therefore, if you want a fun, fast, fat-burning workout, hula hooping can burn hundreds of calories in just 30 minutes. Everyone from Zooey Deschanel to First Lady Michelle Obama is hot for Hula-Hooping, so why not give it a try?

Need a Hoop?

Shop for a hoop that’s at least 40 inches in diameter and weighs 1 to 2 pounds. Some good sources: Hoopnotica, HoopGirl, or RadiantHoops.

How-to Hula Hoop

To start, stand with one foot in front of the other and shift your weight back and forth (versus around in a circle). Was your first few tries less than perfect?  Don’t worry as you’ll still burn major calories and get better every time you spin.

Want to Learn an Advanced Move?

Try walking with your hoop. As Health.com says, begin hooping in Forward Stance. Once the hoop is spinning parallel to the ground, take a small step forward each time you push against the hoop with the front of your hip. (The hoop will hit on alternating sides as you walk.) Once you feel comfortable, try walking faster. You can also walk backward (pushing against the hoop with your lower back) and take side steps (beginning in Side Stance and pushing with the sides of your waist).
