The (All-Time) Best Songs for Yoga

Do you like to listen to slow or fast yoga music?

Do you like to listen to slow or fast yoga music?

Yoga is an exercise that is ameliorated by a peaceful enviornment.

One way, many yogis enjoy their peaceful environment is by the sounds of ambient music that inspires connection, expression and love.

Michele Bickley, author of The Elephant Journal’s “15 All-Time Best Songs for Yoga” agrees with the beauty music can bring to a yoga experience but also states: “Don’t get me wrong, I respect and love classes that have no music. Listening to the symphony of breath is magical.”

Some of Michele’s favorite songs to listen to while while practicing yoga are below.

But, which song is your favorite?

Underwater Love – Smoke City

Breathe – Alexi Murdoch

Love Is My Religion – Ziggy Marley

He Ma Durga – Donna De Lory

So Badly & Blue Whale Cries – Colamiles

Nahma Shivaya – Krishna Das

Somehow – Citizen Cope

Love Holding Love – Wah!

The Ultimate Tips for Safe Stretching

Stretch for 10 minutes every day!

Stretch for 10 minutes every day!

Exercise safety is extremely important before, during and after a workout.

Specifically, you should stretch before and after a workout to improve your flexibility and avoid muscle soreness.

When you begin incorporating stretching in to your daily routine and stretching safely, you will see a positive change in your physical fitness.

Hence, why we have decided to share with you some of our favorite tips from Better Health’s “10 Tips for Safe Stretching“!

  • Stretch for 10 minutes every day. Regular stretching improves your balance, strength and flexibility.
  • Get advice to avoid injury. Check with your doctor or health professional before stretching if you have an injury, are unsure of how to stretch properly or have had a previous injury.
  • Warm up your muscles before stretching. Try 10 minutes of gentle exercise like walking. Stretching cold muscles may result in injury.
  • Hold a sustained stretch for 10 to 30 seconds. Don’t bounce when stretching. Overstretching causes muscle to contract and can cause small tears in fibres.
  • Only stretch to the point of mild discomfort. Once your muscle feels comfortable, increase the stretch then hold it again. If it hurts, you’re pushing too hard.
  • Breathe normally when stretching. Don’t try to hold your breath or perform special breathing exercises.
  • Balance your routine. Work opposing muscle groups each time you stretch. If you start by stretching the muscles in the back of your thigh, then follow by stretching the muscles at the front.
  • Prevent boredom. Add variety to your routine by increasing your stretching repertoire. For example, you could join a yoga class or visit your local physiotherapist for new stretches.

The Ultimate Reasons Why You Should Be Lifting Weights

Get toned and defined muscles when you lift weights!

Get toned and defined muscles when you lift weights!

Let’s weigh in on a common saying: “I don’t do weights because I don’t want to bulk up.”

However, most women should know, that adding weights to your workout routine, won’t turn you into a bodybuilder overnight.

Lifting weights is important for your body and your metabolism and with some of our favorite tips from Lauren Conrad’s team, we’re glad to share with you “Why You Should Be Lifting Weights“!

  • Weights strengthen your bones.
“One of the most important things lifting weights does for your body is strengthening your bones. Lifting weights—not just doing cardio or aerobics—actually helps to prevent the bone disease osteoporosis later in life. In fact, studies have shown that lifting weights can actually increase your bone density and build new bones….”
  • Weights burn fat.
“The more muscular you are, the more calories your body burns throughout the day and the more fat you burn too. Sure, doing cardio, like running or spinning, will burn calories, but doing weights will sculpt your muscles and give you the toned body you want…. “
  • Weights don’t bulk!
“Women are afraid of bulking up when they do weights, but what women don’t realize is that we don’t even have the hormone levels men have to make our figures look like bodybuilders. According to the girls at Tone It Up, it is much more difficult to create massive muscles like the professionals than it is to lean out when using weights. The bulkiness women are afraid of usually comes from a high caloric diet, or not burning enough calories throughout the day…”
  • Weights will make your clothes feel better.
“…Along with eating a healthy diet, lifting weights will help those skinny jeans look better than ever, give you a defined waist in your favorite dress, and make your shoulders and back look toned and feminine in your end-of-summer tank tops.”
Lifting weights are a great addition to your workout routine!

Fitness Tip: “If you’re doing a set of 20 lunges with 5-lb weights, the 18th, 19th, and 20th lunges should feel very challenging. When they start to feel easy, that’s when you know it’s time to bump up your dumbbells to 7- or 8-lb weights.”
